Coach Phil Bennett

Phil Bennett is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and joint head coach at Yokai Grappling Academy alongside Joe Anderson.

“I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2011, coaching the art in 2018, and it’s this combined experience that led me to receive my black belt from the esteemed Roger Gracie in 2022.

I have been very blessed over the years and trained and studied with some of the highest-level grapplers, both nationally and worldwide.

My approach to grappling is rooted in precision and practicality – stripping away the excess and homing in on what works. I am passionate about bringing out the best in people and helping them discover their potential on and off the mats. Jiu-Jitsu is a truly special thing, and I am humbled daily to share what I know with people and pass on what I have learned here at Yokai Grappling Academy.

I am a fully insured and enhanced DBS-checked coach who is passionate about students' success, happiness, safeguarding, and well-being. My goal, alongside Joe, is to build something special where every student, from absolute beginner to seasoned grappler, feels supported, challenged, and inspired”

Phil is available for private coaching, either one-on-one or in small groups. Get in touch for details.

Coach Joe Anderson

Joe Anderson is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and joint head coach alongside Phil Bennett at Yokai Grappling Academy.

‘I started my journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in late 2010 with my professor Tony Bebbington - one of the longest standing Jiu-Jitsu professors in the north west.

I was lucky enough to receive all of my belts from Tony culminating in reviving my black belt in December 2021.

I have been fortunate enough to train with some fantastic grapplers over the years including members of the legendary Gracie family.

My approach to teaching jiu-jitsu is very simple, get rid of the fluff and keep the stuff that really works, in my opinion the best jiu-jitsu is the fundamentals done to the highest level, you want your opponent to know exactly what you’re doing and still be unable to stop it.

I truly believe jiu-jitsu can massively benefit anyone regardless of of age, sex or ability and it is a blessing to be able to share the knowledge and techniques I’ve acquired over the years and pass them on at Yokai Grappling Academy.’

Joe is available for private lessons and small group classes - contact him directly for details.
